 The Kelly Clark Foundation Awards $16,000 in Snowboard Scholarships for this Year
Mammoth Lakes, CA (October 10, 2012) – The Kelly Clark Foundation, is a registered non-profit organization that provides young students the opportunity to achieve their highest potential through snowboarding, and it announced today the distribution of its third round of scholarship funding. In addition, Kelly Clark's latest book "Reaching New Heights" hits bookstands in October 2012.
Clark, a three-time Olympian: 2002 Gold, 2010 Bronze medalist in halfpipe, is widely considered one of the greatest female riders in history. The West Dover, Vermont-native has won every major snowboarding title and event in the history of the sport including the Olympics, U.S. Open, and Winter X Games among others. Her competition schedule for the 2012-2013 is due to include the U.S. Grand Prix series, Winter Dew Tour, Winter X Games and the U.S. Open.

 Snowboard World Cup tour loses 2nd Big Air event

OBERHOFEN, Switzerland (AP) — The International Ski Federation says organizers have cancelled a Snowboard World Cup scheduled at Stockholm on Nov. 17 "due to economical reasons."
Snowboarders start earning points at World Cups this season to qualify for the Sochi Winter Olympics in February 2014.
It's the second Big Air event lost from this season's World Cup calendar after the London stop on Oct. 27 was cancelled last month for financial reasons.
FIS says the British and Swedish ski federations hope to return to the World Cup schedule next season.

 U.S. Open moves to Vail, Colorado - WHAT??!
The Burton U.S. Open Snowboarding Championships, at home in Vermont for the past 30 years, are moving to Vail, Colo., in 2013. The change in location was announced Monday by Burton Snowboards and Vail Resorts. After 27 years at Stratton Mountain, Vt., and 30 years in the state, the event will be held Feb. 25-March 3, 2013, at the area of Vail Resort known as Golden Peak.

 Future of Women's Slopestyle Competition to Change?
March 28, 2012 – ESPN - Kristi Leskinen started a women’s only freestyle skiing contest in 2009. A few years down the road, she realized that this contributed greatly to the progression of women freestyle riders. By providing smaller jumps, the contenders were able to comfortably throw down their hardest tricks; ultimately encouraging progression. Leskinen also issued a survey which concluded that “men and women would benefit greatly from having separate courses in competition” and that women “were injured 3.5 times more often in competition than the men”. As a result, she hopes that these results will help further the progression and safety of the freestyle world for men and women. –G.W. |
 Avalanche Toll Rates Increase
February 29, 2012 - The average annual total of ski and snowboard avalanche fatalities in the U.S. is six. However, there has been a unusual amount of ski and snowboard deaths this season with a total of 19. Experts claim that "the high avalanche danger this year is tied to the thin, weak snowpack that was established earlier this winter". They also predict that if warm seasons with little snowfall continue, then "this year could foreshadow avalanche risk in years to come". -G.W. |

 Freeskiing World Tour and Swatch Freeride World Tour Join Forces
December 22, 2011 - North American-based Subaru Freeskiing World Tour and European-based Swatch Freeride World Tour have joined forces to bring competitive big mountain skiing and snowboarding to the next level. This partnership will help sustain the growth of both competitions globally with an additional event in Revelstoke, BC for 2012. Rod Kessler, the Revelstoke Chief Operating Officer, believes that “the combination of the Swatch Freeride Tour and the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour marks a historic event amongst the Snow Sports industry.” –G.W. |
 Female Snowboarders To Compete In Only Two Stops In Winter Dew Tour
December 22, 2011 - ESPN - This year’s female Winter Dew Tour schedule has been changed due to the amount of participants in the previous years. Traditionally, the Dew Tour consisted of three stops for both men and women. However, as put by the Dew Tour manager, "Since not a lot of the elite-level girls competed in all three stops, we felt going to two stops would provide a less-demanding schedule and more of an opportunity to get the best athletes there, and give them a better opportunity to win the Cup." Professional female snowboarder, Jamie Anderson, doesn’t “think it’s going to 'progress the sport' by taking away events from the women.” –G.W. |
 FIS Disappoints Snowboard Community
November 17, 2011 - ESPN - The long debate between FIS (International Ski Federation) and TTR finally came to an end with FIS rejecting TTR’s plans of partnering up together to determine the Olympic qualification process. This has come as a disappointment for the entire snowboard community especially those in the competition circuit. As explained by Sebatien Toutant, who has medaled in both TTR and FIS events, “Between the Dew Tour, the X Games, the FIS, and the TTR -- it's impossible to compete in them all.” Other pro riders such as Chas Guldemond have also expressed their disappointment at FIS’s uncooperative efforts. –G.W. |
